This is the first written account of Miller County, Territory of Arkansas, as seen through the life of one of its first inhabitants, Claiborne Wright and his family. It reviews all the settlers who moved to the far end of the United States into an area still claimed by Spain, and later Mexico. Though the county was established as part of the United States, the continuing argument about ownership of that territory continued until the Anglo settlers aligned with the new Republic of Texas ideals. No deed records were ever issued in Miller County, but it did have a governmental structure and representation to Little Rock. Many of these Red River settlers moved south to join the Austin's effort when the Choctaw Indians were given parts of Miller County (Southeast Oklahoma). Eventually the Indians received the northern portion of the county, which continued on as a part of Arkansas until 1838. The book was very popular when it was published in 1982, but has been out of print since 1984.

Fine quality research by this author makes the book a genealogical jewel. Written in an easy to read style it's a pleasure to read. Read on a Paperwhite maps etc aren't viewable. A nice touch would have been to make the list of photos a touch link for easy viewing Incredible footnotes nicely accessible by touch link.
This has become my go to book for the Northeast Texas migration. I lost my paper copy and now use this one to search and highlight things I want to go back and read.
